Broomball Registration Form Download (to be dropped off at L.A. United Methodist Church office)
Simply put....
Broomball is a modified form of hockey but instead of a hockey stick you use a modified broom and instead of ice skates you wear normal shoes or boots. Its a fun game that requires no athleticism or previous experience to play.
What is it?
"Broomball is a popular recreational ice sport originating in Canada and played around the world. It is played on a hockey rink, either indoors or outdoors, depending on climate and location.
In a game of broomball there are two teams, each consisting of six players, a goaltender plus five others. The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. Goals are scored by hitting the ball into your opponent's net using your broom. Tactics and plays are similar to those used in sports such as ice hockey, roller hockey and floorball." ~ Wikipeadia
Instead of using a traditional hocky stick, players use a modified straw broom to hit and maneuver the ball around the rink. Broomball is a sport that can be played by anyone because there is no skill involved.
Do I need equipment?
A broomball broom will be provided for you to play with as well as the actual broomball itself and a helmet. You should wear standard winter gear including snow pants, gloves, hat, jacket and boots. Players are also welcome to optionally wear any pads they want such as knee, elbow or arm pads.
You CANNOT modify your shoes to gain traction. Part of the fun of broomball is sliding around.
Is it safe?
As long as you play by the rules its a very safe and fun game to play. Because you are using tennis shoes or boots on the ice is going to be naturally slippery which adds a unique twist to the game. Checking is not allowed in the tournament so injury shouldn't be a problem.
Tournament info
Our goal is to divide up teams based on age and make individual leagues out of them that will each play for their own championship. In the event that leagues don't have enough teams to play we hold the right to make decisions on the fly so that everyone can experience broomball and at least play some games to have fun.
